WHY WOULD I NEED MY OWN WATER STORAGE?
In a large-scale or high impact emergency your city water delivery system will probably be damaged. You may not have water pressure, and your water may even run back into the mains system and drain your pipes completely. In such an emergency responders are overwhelmed and are relying on you to have your own emergency supplies.
DIDN'T IT USED TO BE A 3-DAY SUPPLY?
The Red Cross and Government agencies used to recommend a 3-day supply of food and water. However recent emergency events have shown that it is unlikely services will be restored in 3 days. We are now asked to have at least 5 days of emergency food and water. Additional supplies will help you and your family and also enable you to help others.
WHY WOULD MY SCHOOL INSTALL EMERGENCY WATER STORAGE?
Schools are often a meeting place for people displaced by a catastrophic event. Schools need to ensure that any students at school when an event occurs are taken care of, and that any additional on campus or near campus can be provided for.
WHY NOT USE BOTTLED WATER?
Bottled water is not made to survive harsh physical conditions and long periods of storage. Single use plastic bottles are made with as little plastic as possible to keep them light. This means they easily puncture and rupture. Clear plastic bottles allow sunlight to penetrate the water, releasing chemicals like Bisphenol A into the water, and eventually turning it bad. Replacing pallets of bottles every six months is wasteful and costly.
CAN I USE A BARREL?
Barrels are cheap but so is their performance in a destructive event. Barrels can tip and spill or roll, losing their water and causing damage. A barrel will only allow you to access around two thirds of its volume because the outtake is positioned up the side of the barrel. Clip on tops can easily dislodge when the barrels are bumped. UV can penetrate a barrel, turning the water bad.
